Bhavana: From its direct translation of “Feelings” in Nepali to its Sanskrit interpretation of cultivating, developing and producing, for us, Bhavana, evokes a sense of creation. It represents what we want to achieve as company and what the amazing coffee farms in Nepal have already started. To have a passion, to want to develop it, to use it to make the world just a little bit better, is at the very core of our coffee. Buying this specialty coffee means that you are helping to create jobs, improve infrastructure, and offer opportunities for women, girls and children in these communities. We are excited to see what the future holds for Nepal and it’s coffee.
On what was supposed to be a two-week holiday, Bhavana’s founder, Jennifer Lan, traveled to Nepal and was immediately captivated. As a self proclaimed “beach person”, she was surprised at her pure admiration for this place. She couldn’t help but be awestruck with its dramatic landscape of the Himalayas looming over the peaceful countryside below. However, it was the small villages filled with smiling faces that truly left an indelible mark. It was the people. It was their hospitality, their kindness, and their daily lives and willingness to invite anyone into their home for a cup of tea. Inspired to share this with her friends and family, Jennifer looked to building a bridge that would connect the two seemingly distant worlds and amazingly, found it in coffee. Living in San Francisco for a decade had made her a coffee enthusiast, but never in her wildest dreams did she envision herself entering the world of specialty coffee. Propelled by what coffee could mean for this new, and relatively unknown origin, Jen packed up her life, moved to Nepal, determined to somehow bring Nepalese Coffee to America. And thus, Bhavana Coffee was born.
